As a registered nurse, what do you feel is your most important role?

Part of our purpose as Legal Nurse Consultants is to teach. Our students are often attorneys, paralegals, insurance claims adjusters and other professionals. We also teach other LNCs, especially when we work in a collaborative milieu like MKC Medical Management. And, yes, it’s best to leave your ruler (and any attitude) somewhere else! ☺

Depending on our specialty, we are caregivers, advocates, skilled clinicians and much more. My background, for example, is in emergency nursing. In such a fast-paced, dynamic environment, I filled a wide variety of medical-surgical roles. I realized I was also a teacher.

Why? Because teaching is ongoing process that starts fresh with each new patient and family that you see in a 12-hour shift. Sometimes the teaching is simple, such as how to take a medication correctly or to care for a sutured laceration. Often it is much more than that, such as helping family members and the patients understand complicated injuries after a motor vehicle crash, when the trauma surgeon leaves the room and I’m left with blank stares of incomprehension.

As a nurse, patients and family look to you to help them understand what is happening. In some of life’s most trying times, nurses are the “point of light” for learning about the difficult concepts in health care today.

I’m Still Teaching

As a Legal Nurse Consultant, my pupils are now the attorneys, paralegals and insurance adjustors that deal with all manner of health issues and injuries. LNC’s teach them the ins and outs of “our” world so they can represent their clients knowledgeably.

Of course we can’t forget the other important group that we teach…..each other! Every day is opportunity to mentor, help out a co-worker and pass on your knowledge gained in the trenches. Remember, we are each other’s best resource!
